FAQs
Here are some common questions about truck repair and service
How often should I service my diesel engine?
We recommend servicing your vehicle every 10,000 klms or 6 months which ever comes first. Signs your vehicle may need to be serviced:
- Hard starting
- Blowing Smoke
- Lack of performance
- Knocking
- Rough Running
The best way to ensure your vehicle stays in tip top shape is to ensure your vehicle is serviced regularly this will save you money in the long run
What oil is used during the service of my vehicle?
Peninsula Diesel Repairs uses quality Castrol oil & grease in our workshop. Castrol offers a large range of oils ensuring we are able to supply the correct oil for your car.
Castrol to this day is recommended as the oil of choice by more car manufactures than any other oil brand on the market. Castrol offers a large range of oils.
What is checked in a roadworthy inspection & how long does it take?
A Certificate of Roadworthiness (also known as a ‘roadworthy’ or ‘RWC’) shows that your vehicle’s safe enough to be used on public roads. A roadworthy is required whenever a vehicle is sold, if it’s being re-registered, and to clear some defect notices.
What’s checked?
The roadworthy inspection is a check of the vehicle to make sure that key components are in a good enough condition for safe road use. It includes:
- wheels and tyres
- steering, suspensions and braking systems
- seats and seatbelts
- lights and reflectors
- windscreen, and windows including front wipers and washers
- vehicle structure
- other safety related items on the body, chassis or engine.
What isn’t checked
The roadworthiness test isn’t a check of the mechanical reliability or general condition of a vehicle. A Certificate of Roadworthiness does not mean that:
- the vehicle is in top condition without any wear or deterioration
- non-safety related accessories (such as the air conditioner, rear window demister, electric windows and rear-window wipers) are working
- the items checked during the roadworthy inspection will continue to function after the inspection, e.g. a brake light can stop functioning at any time after the inspection
- the vehicle complies with all of the Australian Design Rules (ADRs)
For a truck roadworthy we allow 4-6 hours as depending on the condition of the vehicle this can vary.
Why should I have my tyres rotated regularly?
Tyres tend to wear unevenly. The front tyres tend to wear on the outside edges because the tyre leans over when you turn a corner. The rear tyres just follow the fronts, so they usually wear more evenly. If you leave tyres in place, those outside edges on the front tyres will wear down much faster than the rest. You’ll have to replace the tyres thousands of kilometres sooner.
A poor alignment or unbalanced tyres can also cause uneven wear.
Rotating tyres keeps them from wearing unevenly. That will make your ride smoother and handling safer. And it extends the life of your tyres, saving you time and money in the long run.
Is it important to grease my truck between services?
YES, It’s extremely important. Grease is one of the least expensive investments you can make to protect your equipment. A $15 tube of grease every 5,000 klms is a small investment to protect your equipment.
Grease is responsible for two things: protecting and lubricating equipment and preventing dirt and water from getting in and damaging metal surfaces. If grease is not regularly applied, you don’t have the constant reconfirming of the protective layer of the metal. Not only does that allow potential for wear because of lack of lubrication, but you also lack protection against the water & dirt coming off the road.
Do you offer fixed price servicing?
Yes, Peninsula Diesel Repairs offer fixed price servicing. Give our service advisor a call on 5978 8400 and we can give you an obligation free quote on what a fixed price service would cos for your car. This service is carried out to your manufactured specification using quality parts & oils. Ensuring that your new car warranty is NOT affected.
Will my warranty be voided for not taking my vehicle to the dealership for servicing?
Absolutely not.
Dealers depend on after-market products like servicing and parts to prop up their profit margins and will be persuasive in trying to convince you to retain their services.
But you do have options.
Servicing or repairing your car at the Peninsula Diesel Repairs will not impact your warranty, provided the mechanic is suitably qualified and that he uses quality parts- such as Peninsula Diesel Repairs. We will perform logbook services and stamp your logbook to reflect they have been completed.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says “a manufacturer’s warranty is a promise to the consumer that the vehicle will be free from defects for a certain period of time”. While a manufacturer can have certain requirements in its warranty terms – such as ensuring any servicing is carried out by qualified staff, according to the manufacturer’s specification, and that appropriate quality parts are used where required – it can’t require you to service your vehicle through an authorised dealer to keep your warranty intact.
“Provided you service the vehicle in accordance with any such requirements, the warranty will remain valid. If the manufacturer’s warranty states that the vehicle can only be serviced by an authorised dealer, this may raise concerns under the Competition and Consumer Act,” the ACCC has said in written guidance to the automotive industry.
